The Tower Free Download

SOUTH Korean disaster action film The Tower follows the Hollywood template for films of this genre. There’s a huge cast of characters, there are romances, there are many special effects and there are depictions of bravery and sacrifice that will elicit tears from the audience.
However, the acting in The Towers is disappointing and the editing and photography are lacklustre.
Viewers can’t relate to any actor as it just skims the surface in that regard, even if it spends the first quarter of the film introducing its many actors.

Water, water everywhere.
The finale, meanwhile, is a disaster in itself. If director Kim Ji-hun thought that showing a high-rise tower collapsing would be his greatest act, he thought wrong.
What was his goal of showing a tower crumbling like New York’s World Trade Center on Sept 11, 2001? Was it to show that the South Korean film industry had reached the pinnacle of the disaster film category? Or was it to show that he could leave everyone in the dust?
The film is set on Christmas Eve in a luxury tower. Preparations are in full flight for a party that will welcome the creme de la creme of society.
This immediately evokes Bruce Willis’s Die Hard, in which his character’s wife’s firm is organising a Christmas Eve party in a tower. The party is later gatecrashed by European terrorists.

A firefighter uses a shield to protect a survivor.
However, instead of a terrorist attack, viewers are treated to a dubious spectacle of helicopters crashing into the tower during a stunt gone awry. It’s actually a twin tower, similar to the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, right down to the connecting bridge.
Before the pyrotechnics, viewers are introduced to maintenance and operations head Dae-ho (Kim Sang-kyung), the single dad of Ha-na. He’s smitten with kitchen head Yoon-hee (Son Ye-jin), who’s much younger than him. The head of the firefighters is Young-ki (Sol Kyung-gu).

Son Ye-jin hangs on for her dear life.
A cleaner is asked to pick up the poo of a rich woman’s dog. The cleaner says regulations require dog owners to clean up the poo, but the snob disagrees.
The cleaner is working her butt of for her college-going son, but he doesn’t appreciate his mum’s sacrifice.
When the police commissioner arrives at the scene of the accident, he insists that it’s important to get the important people out of the carnage.
I thought the film would exploit the idea of society putting value on people, but, alas, nothing comes out of that snippet of information.

The film’s firing on all cylinders.
The chairman of the building says he wants to lower the fire walls, which will force survivors further up the tower. “If we don’t do it, we lose everything,” he says.
The film misses a chance to teach him a lesson for focusing on saving his building rather than saving people.
The film obviously has a soft spot for the underprivileged. It shows the cleaner, stuck under debris, sticking a wad of cash into the maintenance manager’s hand. She had borrowed the money from her employer to pay for her son’s tuition fees.
Some viewers may ask why she didn’t receive the money through her bank account.
In another scene, a heavily-pregnant woman returns to save a young couple trapped in an elevator. Boy, can she run, even in her condition.

Kim Sang-kyung and Son Ye-jin are towering personalities.
The maintenance manager is separated from his kid daughter, so he begs the firefighters to let him look for her. This is, of course, unheard of in the annals of firefighting, but it does make for good drama.
The kid daughter wails about her missing dad, but viewers won’t sympathise with her as her acting is terrible.
She had been asked early on to fake a cry to evoke a response from her dad’s love target, so viewers know what’s she capable of. She will bawl her eyes out a few times in the film, but to no avail.
Later, when the tower is fracturing (cracking), the maintenance manager even has time to describe his escape plan in detail by drawing it out on a wall. Also, where did he find a marker pen in a disaster area?

What could be worse than jumping from a tower that’s about to collapse?
The firefighting captain has the film’s best line when he declines a new firefighter’s offer to take over his spot to detonate a bomb. “I’m not doing this for you, but for the people you will save in the future.”
He then has time to leave a voice message on his wife’s phone. Firstly, viewers will wonder how he found reception in a disaster area. Secondly, they will also wonder why firefighters carry personal handphones while on duty.
The Tower pushes the right action buttons but it also fails in many areas, not least the acting and the inability to garner empathy for its actors.
